Parents

Hello Parents!

Whether you know it or not, you are the most important resource for your student. Parents are often the first link in a student’s support system when the student is not sure what to do or they need to know they are on the right track. This can be challenging for a parent because of the fine line between wanting what is best for your student and refraining from “fixing” everything when expectations are high. Homesickness is one of the first challenges that may arise with your student. There is a good chance they are going to want to come home the very first weekend of the semester. This is the time when they can be encouraged to stay on campus and get involved with friends and the campus community. Perhaps your student has not chosen a major or they have no idea what they want to major in.

This is very common AND very normal. A large number of students come to college undecided on a major and a large majority of students that were originally decided will change their major. This is actually a wonderful time for students to explore their interests and even take advantage of assessments that are offered at the colleges’ Testing Center, usually at a minimal fee. Some examples are, The Meyers-Briggs or Strong Interest Inventories. Parents need support too!  More and more colleges and universities are realizing the benefit that parents have with a Parent Services area. Parents are getting involved through Orientation, Parent Organizations, and Family Weekend. Life Coaching can assist you as well through this fascinating, exciting, and sometimes overwhelming transition in your life.
